9mm Hollow point expanding ammunition.

Reloading means the process of assembling ammunition using previously fired round cases. In particular we will show you how to reload .357 magnum and .44 magnum calibres. The cases will consist of powder and primer, the primer ignites the gunpowder creating the reaction needed to propel the bullet down the barrel. Brass is the ideal material for the cases as it can be reused many times, after sizing them back to their normal size, they can look as good as new, however you can not safely recycle the lead bullet, this will need to be purchased separately.

Why Reload?

Reloading is more usefully known for recycling the components that make up a complete round to fire. Not only being great for the environment but it can also be an enjoyable hobby for some in your own leisure time. Other main reasons could be as follows:

  • Faith in your accuracy
  • Cost
  • Efficiency
  • Shooting more frequently
  • Increased understanding of your hobby

Having trust that you have reloaded and created your very own round means that the accuracy of gunpowder ratio is precise compared to factory built ammo. The costs involved work out to be less than pre-made, however at the time of writing the Ukrainian war has slowed down this process, as to be expected. Ideally all components would be to hand in a speedy time but currently a waiting time and the costing is being compromised. And finally, shooting as frequently as you want using your own created ammunition gives a feeling of some satisfaction.

Is it Dangerous?

For anyone choosing to reload your own rounds, like with most sports, there are safety measures that need to be taken seriously. It can be perfectly safe, as long as you do it right. The precision in making them is on you and please remember we can not be held responsible for any errors caused in the making. You must make sure you follow the guide thoroughly and accurately, it goes without saying that storing the contents, the primer and gunpowder, in separate places is highly recommended. The primer can be detonated if mishandled.  Eye protection must be worn as a precaution.

What Are Small Bore Rifles?

Small bore rifles refers to the calibre (diameter) being used of not more than .22 inches. Small bore rifle users can aim at targets of various distances. Single-shot, bolt-action and revolver rifles are legal in the UK, providing you have a licence for it. The larger the bore the bigger the power it will generate. The NSRA (National Small-bore Rifle Association) is the National governing body for all small-bore rifle and pistol target shooting in the UK, including airguns.

What Are Pistol Calibres?

Pistol calibres are typically:

9mm

.45acp

.38 special

.357 magnum

.44 special

.44 magnum

Generally these pistols calibre/cartridges are found in a carbine rifle. These calibres are used at OnTarget Range.

Decap

(Also known as ‘Decap’) Introducing you to the ‘decapping die set’, this video shows you how to deprime the primer from the previously fired cases. A simple but important stage to the Reloading process.

Cleaning

How to use an ultrasonic cleaner and a personal recipe for a brilliant cleaning solution that works including:

  • De-ironised water
  • White vinegar
  • Citric acid

This part of the process should take 7 minutes.

Drying

Here you can see our recommendation for drying your cases usually completed in 30 to 40 minutes.

Polishing

At this stage, you do not have to polish your dried cases but here, this video will explain how to use a Tumbling machine and some suggested media to complete the simple polishing stage.

Tumbling

Why use a tumbling machine? The tumbling machine makes use of the vibration to shift around it’s contents causing the media to impact with the brass thus, polishing it. The machine is best left for 60 minutes to ensure the cases are thoroughly polished.

Pocket

Dealing with the obstructions caused during the tumbling stage, introducing the primer pocket cleaner. Some of the media often gets lodged in the flash hole and will require cleaning.

Priming

This video shows you how to use and set up the Lee Precision Ram breech lock and the hand-load version. Making sure you check the correct primer for your calibre using the scale and explaining the purposes of the collet die neck sizing.

Adding Powder

This video will explain how to weigh your powder, using digital scales.

DISCLAIMER: the amount of powder is what we use at the On Target Range.
